Resume Mistakes Freshers Make — 10 Things That Get You Rejected
6 min readMay 2026
Most fresher resumes get rejected not because the candidate lacks skills — but because the resume makes it easy to say no. A recruiter spends 6-10 seconds on the first scan. One of these 10 mistakes and you're out before anyone reads a single bullet point.
The 10 Mistakes
1
Objective Statement Instead of Summary
❌ Mistake: "I am a hardworking and passionate fresher seeking a challenging opportunity to grow and contribute." — This tells the recruiter nothing about you.
✅ Fix: Write a 2-line Professional Summary instead: "Python developer with 2 deployed projects and an AWS Cloud Practitioner certificate. Looking for backend roles at product-driven companies."
2
More Than 1 Page
❌ Mistake: A 3-page resume for a fresher with zero work experience. Recruiters see this as padding — it signals you don't know how to prioritize.
✅ Fix: 1 page. Hard limit. Cut ruthlessly. If it doesn't add value in the recruiter's first 10-second scan, remove it.
3
Generic Skills Section
❌ Mistake: "Skills: MS Office, Internet browsing, Teamwork, Communication." This is filler. Every candidate writes this.
✅ Fix: List specific technical skills: "Python, React.js, MySQL, AWS EC2, Git, REST APIs". Name the actual tools, not categories.
4
Projects With No Details
❌ Mistake: "Project: Library Management System. Used Java and MySQL." This tells the recruiter nothing about what you actually did.
✅ Fix: "Library Management System — Built with Java Spring Boot and MySQL. Role-based authentication, 3 user types. Deployed on AWS EC2. GitHub: github.com/yourname/lms"
5
No GitHub Link
❌ Mistake: Resume with projects listed but no GitHub link. The recruiter has no way to verify your work.
✅ Fix: Every project on your resume should have a GitHub link. If the code isn't on GitHub, it doesn't count. Create the repo and add a README before applying.
6
Personal Details That Don't Belong
❌ Mistake: "Date of Birth: 15/03/2002, Religion: Hindu, Father's Name: [Name]" — This is outdated and takes up valuable space.
✅ Fix: Remove DOB, religion, caste, marital status, father's name. Keep only: Name, email, phone, LinkedIn, GitHub, city.
7
Spelling and Grammar Errors
❌ Mistake: "Developed a web application using Pyhton and MySQl." One spelling error and you're out. It signals carelessness.
✅ Fix: Use Grammarly on your resume before submitting. Read it out loud. Have a friend check it. Zero errors is the standard.
8
Two-Column Layout
❌ Mistake: A visually impressive two-column resume with sidebar. Looks great to humans. ATS systems read it left-to-right and mix the columns — output is gibberish.
✅ Fix: Single column only for any resume you submit to an online portal. Save the fancy design for networking events where a human sees it directly.
9
Listing Skills You Can't Explain
❌ Mistake: "Skills: Machine Learning, Blockchain, Cloud Computing, Cybersecurity" — all listed without any projects or certifications to back them up.
✅ Fix: Only list skills you can talk about for 5 minutes in an interview. Interviewers will pick exactly the most impressive-sounding thing you can't actually explain.
10
Same Resume for Every Application
❌ Mistake: Sending the exact same resume to TCS, a startup, and a product company. Each has different priorities and keywords.
✅ Fix: Customize the skills section and summary for each application. Takes 5 minutes. Dramatically improves your ATS score and interview relevance.
